Invoice requirements: what must be on your invoice?
The legal requirements for a correct invoice in the Netherlands, with a handy checklist and an explanation of invoice numbering.
An invoice must meet legal requirements. Otherwise your customer may not be able to deduct the VAT and you can run into trouble in an audit.
Checklist
- Name and address of you and your customer
- Your VAT number and KvK number
- Invoice date and a unique, sequential invoice number
- Description and quantity of the goods or services
- Supply date or the period in which you supplied
- Amount excluding VAT, the VAT rate and the VAT amount
- For reverse charge or exemption: a note saying so
Invoice number
Use a continuous series, for example 2026-001, 2026-002. Don’t skip numbers or reuse them.
Payment term
If you agree nothing, 30 days is usual in business. State the term and your bank account on the invoice.
